Penelope Audio Player

Penelope is an audio player I made for my portfolio, actually. You've probably seen it around these parts if you've been looking in the music section. It'll have greater uses in the future, but right now it sits here making the music look pretty.

I have to say, this thing was surprisingly a pain in the butt to make. I've done all kinds of work with sound in Flash, but, as with everything in Flash, making a scrubber is unpleasant. When Flash tries to stream an mp3, it doesn't know the full duration until it has finished downloading. So, while I love the idea of the player doing all the work on the fly, having it ready beforehand made more sense.

Penelope will eventually become part of a larger project--a media publishing tool for honest by design (the next version of princess of justice). This has been in the works for a while now, but Penelope and Gonzalez are helping to move that development along.

In case you're wondering, Penelope was named after the wife of Odysseus (from, you guessed it, Homer's Odyssey). I picked her mainly because I like the name but also because sound in Flash has long been ignored but nonetheless consistent--an image of fidelity, which is what Penelope is most often associated with.
